Positive impacts of peristeaming on long term effects of c-section scar pain

Though peristeaming could not eradicate all of my client's symptoms within two months, we were able to tackle the main concern she came to me with: long term c-section scar pain.

Background

My client  (who prefers to remain anonymous) is in her mid-to-late forties. She’s been experiencing abdominal scar tissue pain which she attributes to the four caesareans she’s had. Her children are in their teen and pre-teen years, meaning her last caesarean was over a decade ago.

Despite this lengthy time frame, she has considerable pain in the lower abdominal area which stops her moving her body in ways she would like. Her cycles are also shortening and her periods are painful and heavy, possibly due to the transitioning hormones in perimenopause. She is also experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, difficulty sleeping, spotting and lots of brown blood during menses.

Solution

My client’s concerns of heavy bleeding and abdominal pain are both signs of uterine stagnation, an imbalance where the uterus has old residue buildup. This could happen for a variety of reasons and in her case, it can be attributed to scar tissue build-up from the multiple c-sections she’s had. Scar tissue though very functionally important, leaves many long term negative side effects if not softened and elasticised.

Though my client was presenting a lot of symptoms, her main concern was the pain caused by scar tissue. As such I recommended alternating the Calm blend and Replenish blend and steaming 3 consecutive days of steaming before and after her period.

I also recommended doing an overnight castor oil compress and self-massage along her scar line to help loosen the scar tissue externally (peristeaming addresses the scar tissue internally).

At our next meeting a fortnight later, my client expressed her desire to steam more often, as she found peristeaming lessened her abdominal pain considerably. Given she was suffering from long term consequences of not recovering fully from her caesareans many years prior, I advised she can steam daily for 90 days, pausing for menses. This is a postpartum steaming schedule reserved for women who have scars and ongoing issues.

Outcome

We meet a couple of months later, and these were her symptoms:

  • Period cramps had reduced a lot, but the flow was still heavy on the first two days.
  • Scar pain has gone completely, and she is able to go about her day-to-day activities with ease.

Conclusion

My client’s commitment to addressing her scar pain is reflective of her outcomes. Though two months of peristeaming could not eradicate all her symptoms, we were able to tackle the main concern she came to me with: long term abdominal pain caused by four c-sections. As you can see, postpartum is not just 6 weeks post birth, it can be over a decade long.
